Ideas of teaching rhythm.

Teaching rhythm in a practical way is always difficult. Students resist the traditional way of counting while yet trying to sing or play. I am looking for your ideas.

Clapping or tapping is an alternate way of teaching rhythm but the most practical is counting in your head. Unfortunately, it is also the one most resisted by students. I start from the first lesson to reinforce counting. Comments like, "Say and play! Say and Play!" are constant reminders for kids to count while they are playing. I think it's helpful if they are actively involved in figuring out the counts. If someone else does it,then where's the challenge?
